OLAP - Olap Operation (Drill, ...)

1 - About

The analyst can navigate through the database and screen for a particular subset of the data, changing the data's orientations and defining analytical calculations.

The user-initiated process of navigating by calling for page displays interactively, through the specification of slices via rotations and drill down/up is sometimes called “slice and dice”. Common operations include slice and dice, drill down, roll up, and pivot.

3 - Slice and Dice

Slice and Dice is the ability to remove or retain subsets of data.

3.1 - Slice

A slice is a subset of a multi-dimensional array corresponding to a single value for one or more members of the dimensions not in the subset.

Slicing: Involves using a member of one dimension to provide a slice of the cube.

Example, you could slice a cube by using a particular product and view all sales of that product across all dates and customers.

3.2 - Dice

The dice operation is a slice on more than two dimensions of a data cube (or more than two consecutive slices).

Dicing. Involves providing values for every dimension to locate a single value for a cube.

Example: look for sales of a particular product on a particular day to a particular customer.

4 - Drill

4.1 - Drill Down/Up

4.2 - Drilling across

4.3 - Drill through

Drill through is a term used to describe the act of exploring or browsing items like folders, files or related components. Generally associated with drill down and drill up, which indicate vertical movements between components, drill through is an action in which you move horizontally between two items via a related link. An example to drill through is in the case of two reports that are in a master /detail relation with each other, and by clicking a master item on the master report you reach the details of the clicked item on the details report.

In data warehousing, generally, Drill-through is the ability to navigate from data/reporting of a data source to data found in another data source.

This concept is used primarily in MOLAP cubes where detailed atomic data is not usually kept.

5 - Roll-up

A roll-up involves computing all of the data relationships for one or more dimensions. To do this, a computational relationship or formula might be defined.

6 - Pivot

pivot to change the dimensional orientation of a report or page display
