About
The IP protocol is a Network layer protocol (level 3 of OSI) that:
- gets data and transports them in one or more ip packet.
- is used by protocols like UDP and TCP (known also as TCP/IP).
Example
TCP/IP sends a TCP packet known as segment:
- which is carried in one or more IP packets by the IP protocol
- which are each carried in one or more Ethernet packet known as frame by the ethernet
Internet protocol suite (TCP/UDP)
The internet protocol suite (TCP and UDP) uses it as the transport layer.
- TCP sends Segment packet to the IP protocol.
- UDP sends Datagram packet to the IP protocol.
List
A host can have several IP addresses and IP names, but it can only have one host name
