They express surprise, emotion, or demand attention.

These are words and phrases that express:

  • surprise
  • or demand attention.

These interjections typically stand alone and you will not usually use them in formal academic.

You hear these more in spoken communication rather than you do writing. But if you're writing informal or dialogue, they work.

Interjections are often placed at the beginning of a sentence.
