What is a Mailing List?

About

A mailing list is a list of email address.

The users:

  • may have subscribed to the list
  • or are a part of a group

Storage

The list is stored as an alias (ie an alias has one or many addresses listed).

How it works?

When an email is sent to the mailing list:

  • the sender is set to the mailing list address
  • the from header (author) of the message may be set:
    • to the mailing list address
    • to a unique address

Unsubscribe

A mechanism should be provided to be able to unsubscribe.

To unsubscribe, the user needs to:

  • send an email to a specific address. example: [email protected]
  • click on a URL that is specified by the List-Unsubscribe header
List-Unsubscribe: <https://www.example.com/email-unsubscribe?listid=xxxx>
