CPU - Architecture: 32-bit and 64-bit - Word size

1 - About

The bits number of a processor represents the length of a word

The number of bits in a word (the word size, word width, or word length) is an important characteristic of any specific processor design or computer architecture.

It determines how big the memory can be (ie how big the memory offset number can be). See memory size

  • a 32-bit computer (4 bytes)
  • a 64-bit computer (8 bytes)

The computing world is in transition from 8 bit to 32-bit to 64-bit computers.

The only limitation imposed is by the 32-bit or 64-bit mode of the process.

  • A 64-bit OS can execute both 32-bit and 64-bit programs as the 64-bit mode is an upward extension of 32-bit mode.
  • A 32-bit OS can only execute 32-bit programs.
