CPU - Architecture: 32-bit and 64-bit - Word size
Table of Contents
1 - About
The number of bits in a word (the word size, word width, or word length) is an important characteristic of any specific processor design or computer architecture.
- a 32-bit computer (4 bytes)
- a 64-bit computer (8 bytes)
The computing world is in transition from 8 bit to 32-bit to 64-bit computers.
The only limitation imposed is by the 32-bit or 64-bit mode of the process.
- A 64-bit OS can execute both 32-bit and 64-bit programs as the 64-bit mode is an upward extension of 32-bit mode.
- A 32-bit OS can only execute 32-bit programs.
