Colours directly opposite to each other in a colour wheel and appear opposite in character are called complementary colours.

The opponent color theory suggests that there are three opponent channels:

  • red versus green,
  • blue versus yellow,
  • and black versus white

3 - Glossary

  • Direct complements: Are colours that are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel.
  • Split complements: A colour and the two colours adjacent to it’s direct complement.
